
Budgam, June 7: The District Cycling Association Budgam organised a leg of the ASMITA Khelo India Women’s League, aiming to promote grassroots participation of women in sports under the Government of India’s Khelo India initiative.
The event, part of the ASMITA programme (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action), witnessed enthusiastic participation from school students and local sports clubs, with young women competing in cycling events across different categories.
Officials said the league is designed not only as a competitive platform but also as a means to build confidence, discipline and visibility for emerging women athletes from smaller regions. They added that such initiatives help strengthen women’s participation in organised sports and encourage a culture of fitness and empowerment.
The event was flagged off by Principal CBHS Nazir Ahmad and attended by J&K Cycling District President Srinagar Mushtaq Ahmad, Joint Secretary J&K Cycling Association Mohd Akber Khan, and Organising Secretary Waheed Ahmad.
Winners in the Sub-Junior category included Fozia Younis (Gold), Aisha Bashir (Silver), and Arbeena Shaheen (Bronze). In the Junior Girls category, Divyanshi Singh won Gold, followed by Rabia Ahad (Silver) and Sadiya Suhail (Bronze). In the Elite category, Sehreena Farooq secured Gold, Arbeen Mohi Ud Din Silver, and Iqra Manzoor Bronze.
Organisers said the Budgam edition reflected growing enthusiasm among girls for competitive cycling and reaffirmed the goal of expanding opportunities for women athletes at the grassroots level under the Khelo India mission.
