Kupwara, Sep 14: An Army-backed flag-making centre in north Kashmir’s Kupwara has emerged as a platform for women’s empowerment, providing livelihood opportunities and helping local women develop skills and achieve greater financial independence.

The initiative has so far benefited around 140 women, offering them an opportunity to earn through the production of flags while strengthening their participation in local economic activity.
The centre, supported by the Indian Army as part of its community outreach and welfare initiatives, aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for women, particularly in areas where access to formal employment remains limited.
For many of the beneficiaries, the initiative provides more than an income source. It has helped them acquire practical skills, work collectively and contribute to their household earnings.
The programme also reflects a broader focus on linking community development initiatives with women’s economic empowerment in the border district. By creating opportunities closer to home, such initiatives can help women overcome challenges related to mobility, employment and access to markets.
The flag centre has also provided a platform for women to participate in an activity with a strong national and community dimension. The production of national flags has enabled the beneficiaries to combine livelihood generation with a sense of participation in community and nation-building activities.
