The festival, a major cultural event for the Sangtam Naga tribe, will continue until September 5, bringing together communities from across the region in a shared spirit of heritage, unity, and celebration.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by traditional music, folk dances, tribal rituals, and cultural exhibitions that reflected the deep-rooted heritage of the Sangtam tribe. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Dr. Neiphiu Rio, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, underscoring the importance of cultural festivals in strengthening social bonds and preserving indigenous traditions.
Representing the Assam Rifles, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and the Commandant attended the event as special guests. Their presence reflected the force's enduring commitment to the welfare of local communities, cultural preservation, and peace-building efforts in the Northeast region.
The participation of Assam Rifles in the Mungmung Festival reaffirmed the strong relationship between the force and the people of Nagaland. Over the years, Assam Rifles has gone beyond its security mandate to engage with local populations through social, cultural, and development initiatives.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, a senior Assam Rifles officer remarked, “Being a part of Mungmung is not just an honour, but also a testament to the deep ties we share with the people of Nagaland. These cultural engagements foster trust, understanding, and reinforce our commitment to lasting peace and unity in the region.”
The festival, often dubbed the "Mini Hornbill", is a localized celebration that mirrors the larger Hornbill Festival, showcasing the unique customs and vibrant traditions of the region’s tribes. Events such as traditional games, indigenous food fairs, and craft exhibitions also formed part of the celebrations, drawing locals and visitors alike.
As the Mungmung Festival continues over the next two days, Assam Rifles is expected to further participate in various community-driven activities, contributing to the celebration and promotion of Naga culture. Their involvement sends a strong message of harmony, coexistence, and respect for the region's rich cultural diversity.
With security forces and civil society joining hands in such cultural festivities, the spirit of “Unity in Diversity” continues to thrive in the hills of Nagaland.
