Tening (Nagaland), Sep 5 : In a major blow to cross-border smuggling operations, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Nagaland Police intercepted a truck loaded with illegal foreign-origin cigarettes in Tening, Peren district, Nagaland. The contraband, valued at crores of rupees, was seized during a routine intelligence-based operation carried out under the command of Spear Corps.
According to official sources, the smuggled cigarettes were being transported through unlawful channels, bypassing customs and tax duties—causing massive revenue losses to the government and threatening the local economy. The operation marks a significant victory in the fight against illegal trade in the Northeast region.
Authorities revealed that the truck was intercepted based on specific inputs regarding the movement of contraband through the area. Upon detailed inspection, boxes of foreign-brand cigarettes—banned for sale in India due to regulatory violations—were discovered, concealed beneath legitimate-looking cargo.
“This operation not only saves government revenue but also protects small shopkeepers and prevents access of harmful products to youth,” said an official from Assam Rifles. The rise in such smuggling activities is a matter of concern, as these cigarettes often find their way into the hands of minors and contribute to growing health risks.
The timely action by security forces has been widely appreciated by the local community. Residents of Tening and nearby areas expressed relief, noting that such illegal trade has long threatened local businesses and put young people at risk.
The seized goods have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation, and a case has been registered. Officials hinted at the possibility of a larger network involved in the smuggling ring, and further inquiries are underway.
The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Nagaland Police, continue to remain vigilant against all forms of smuggling and anti-national activities. This latest bust highlights their commitment to law enforcement, public safety, and economic integrity in the sensitive border regions of Nagaland.
