18683 Kgs of meat products inspected in J&K, 102 cases compounded

Srinagar, Oct 4: Nearly 18,683.5 kg of meat and meat products came under the scanner of food-safety authorities in Jammu and Kashmir during a dedicated inspection drive with the officials lifting 1,826 samples, compounding 102 cases and imposing fines of Rs 38.58 lakh, according to government data.

The latest meat and meat-products inspection data show that 1,826 samples were lifted during the drive, covering approximately 18.68 tonnes of meat and related products.
As many as 144 cases were decided, while 102 cases were compounded, with penalties amounting to Rs 38.58 lakh.
The government figures show that 309 cases were filed during 2026-27, compared with 1,211 in 2025-26—a decline of nearly 75 per cent. Inspections also fell from 21,120 to 9,345, while the number of non-conforming samples declined from 690 to 359.
According to the data, during 2025-26, authorities conducted 21,120 inspections across J&K and lifted 7,001 enforcement samples and 3,443 surveillance samples. Of these, 690 samples were found to be non-conforming. A total of 1,211 cases were filed, while 1,721 cases were decided, including cases carried forward from previous years. Fines totalling Rs 1.70 crore were imposed, while 2,733 cases remained pending.
Jammu district recorded 2,997 inspections and 332 cases filed while Srinagar recorded 1,498 inspections and 130 cases. Anantnag reported 87 cases, Pulwama 80, Budgam 47 and Kathua 105.
The government separately reported 154 cases relating to meat and meat products in Kashmir during 2025-26. Of these, 120 had been decided and 34 remained pending, with Rs 30.12 lakh imposed in fines.
For 2026-27, authorities reported 4,994 enforcement samples and 2,145 surveillance samples from 9,345 inspections. Non-conforming samples stood at 359, while 309 cases were filed and 475 decided. The number of pending cases stood at 2,569, with fines of Rs 63.24 lakh imposed.
A non-conforming sample is one that fails prescribed food-safety or quality standards upon testing. The department’s sampling figures represent different categories of monitoring and should not automatically be treated as a single pool of samples for calculating violations.
