14-yr girl dies on way to terminate pregnancy in Kishtwar, teacher arrested

Srinagar, Aug 21: A 14-year-old girl student, who was allegedly impregnated by the school teacher, died while being taken from Kishtwar towards Jammu for medical treatment to terminate pregnancy. Police have arrested a teacher and another accused.

Officials said the minor girl hailing from Chatroo area of Kishtwar, who is a class 4 student, was being taken towards Jammu from Kishtwar for termination of pregnancy when her condition deteriorated during the journey. She died before reaching the destination.
The minor was allegedly impregnated by the school teacher Khalid Ahmed Sheikh.
The teacher was taken into custody as police launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the minor's pregnancy and her subsequent death.
The circumstances surrounding the case, including the nature of the relationship between the minor and the accused and the events preceding her death, are under investigation.
Police station Kishtwar has registered FIR N0 34/2026 under Sections 61(2), 65(1), 90, 91 and 92 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, besides Sections 4, 6, 8, 10 and 17 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
As per the allegations contained in the FIR, the minor, who was a student at the school, was allegedly subjected to repeated sexual assault by the headmaster, resulting in her pregnancy.
The FIR further alleges that attempts were subsequently made to suppress the matter and that money was offered to the family.
The incident has caused shock in the Kishtwar area, with local residents demanding a thorough investigation and strict punishment if the allegations against the accused are established.
A complete shutdown was observed in the Chatro area with shops and other business establishments remaining closed.
The case has also raised concerns over the safety and protection of children, particularly the responsibility of educational institutions to safeguard minor students.
