KU hosts national seminar on Yoga

Srinagar, July 30: The Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS), University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), organised a one-day national seminar on the theme "The Social Life of Yoga: From Tradition to Contemporary Practice" at the University’s Main Campus.
The seminar sought to examine Yoga from social, cultural and philosophical perspectives, exploring its evolution from a traditional practice to its contemporary relevance in promoting health, well-being and community engagement. It also provided an interdisciplinary platform for scholars to deliberate on Yoga's significance in modern society.
In her message, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, described Yoga as an integral part of India's intellectual and cultural heritage and underscored the role of universities in fostering informed academic engagement with its philosophical, social and contemporary dimensions.
Addressing the inaugural session, Dean Academic Affairs, KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, emphasised the importance of engaging with India's knowledge traditions through academic inquiry.
"Yoga, apart from being a physical exercise, is a subject of intellectual and cultural inquiry. Universities should encourage interdisciplinary discussions that examine its historical foundations as well as its relevance in contemporary society," he said.
Dean Students' Welfare, KU, Prof. Seema Singh, highlighted Yoga's contribution to physical and mental well-being while also fostering discipline, self-awareness and social responsibility. She stressed the need to create greater awareness among students about its wider educational and societal significance.
Earlier, Director, CCAS, KU and Convenor of the seminar, Prof. Wahid Nasaru, welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of organising the seminar. He said the programme was aimed at promoting scholarly dialogue on Yoga's philosophical foundations and its evolving role in contemporary social and cultural contexts.
Seminar Coordinator and faculty member at CCAS, Dr. Parvana Bhat, presented an overview of the seminar and outlined its objectives.
The seminar was attended by faculty members, researchers, scholars, students and participants from within and outside the University.
The inaugural session was conducted by Dr. Mohmad Ilham Sheikh, faculty member at CCAS, while the vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Parvana Bhat.
