Yoga is Life

June 21, 2022 |

The world is commemorating International Day of Yoga on June 21 with this year’s theme ‘Yoga for Humanity’ rightly addressing the contours of linking it with health and overall wellbeing of all humans on this Mother Earth which is now craving for ancient roots to help survive the onslaught of modernity. Yoga has turned out to be a vital part of life and practice it would bring in holistic well-being and deepen a sense of connection between inner consciousness and the external world. Yoga is a rare scientific method that improves physical and mental strength, creates a crystallized center in the individual, helps in managing stress, and promotes self-care. The credit for making it global by having international recognition in the form of the United Nations adopting a particular day for its observance goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has brought new lease of life to its worldwide acceptance. Calling Yoga, a priceless gift from the ancient history of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pushed for remembrance of yogic practices. Ultimately, on December 11, 2014, the UN declared June 21 as International Yoga Day. Notwithstanding some apprehensions in the Muslim world a decade ago, the Prime Minister’s efforts in eulogizing its benefits have now attracted everyone in Gulf or Middle east to practice it. The case of a woman from conservative Saudi Arabia, Nouf Marwaai stands testimony to the fact of its acceptance and reach so much so that she asserted that the values of the yoga tradition were not different from her cultural values. She is the first Saudi-certified yoga instructor and founder of the Arab Yoga Foundation. She enhanced awareness of yoga in the Kingdom and has been awarded the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind. What makes Yoga different from other physical activities including sports or games, is its contribution to resilience against several diseases and through the unity of body and mind, it provides a holistic approach to health and well-being. In Kashmir too, natives like Mohammad Tahir and Shabir Ahmed Dar have been organizing yoga camps and making people understand the nuances to use it for health purposes. The administration should make it compulsory in schools wherein young students are trained in its various forms like breath work and various asanas. The adoption in stricter form could put them away from smoking, drug addiction, or other evils. Yoga indeed is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition and it is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature.
