After cracking down on the separatists, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has interrogated former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and minister in PDP-BJP government, Altaf Bukhari’s brother, in the ‘terror funding case’.
According to a report in a national daily, Altaf’s younger brother Tariq Bukhari was questioned in the terror-funding case by NIA.
Altaf Bukhari held a number of portfolios in the PDP-BJP coalition government including floriculture, education and finance before he was unceremoniously removed from the cabinet by the then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.
According to the report, Altaf has been on the agencies’ radar since the case was registered by the NIA in 2017. The report said a carpet businessman identified as Nasir Shafi Mir of Srinagar had been apprehended by Delhi police in February 2006 in Bukhari’s vehicle on Delhi’s Pandara Road with Rs 55 lakh and explosives.
Mir was jailed for a year and after being released on a bail, he fled to Dubai. Last year, NIA raided the houses of Mir alias Babullo at Lal Bazar and Nishat in Srinagar. He is still a wanted in the said case and has been declared as fugitive.
It is for the first time that the agency has questioned a suspect related to the leader of a mainstream camp in the terror funding case after jailing nearly dozen separatists in the terror funding case
The NIA is investigating the terror funding case following the disclosure of the Jammu Kashmir National Front chairman Nayeem Khan who was caught on camera bragging about the Hurriyat’s capabilities in fanning unrest in Kashmir.
Days after the video was broadcast on national TV channels, the NIA registered a case in 2017 and arrested nearly dozen separatist leaders, a businessman and a photojournalist in connection with the case. The latter was released on bail by court reportedly for want of evidence.
Another top Hurriyat leader, Shabir Shah, is in custody at New Delhi while his daughter has also been summoned by the agency. The Enforcement Directorate is investigating cases of “hawala” money transfer against him.
