Nestled amidst the serene landscapes and fragrant air of Kashmir lies a concealed challenge, a less visible challenge has taken hold within this beautiful valley. This menace, known as the coaching culture, has soaked into the fabric of Kashmiri society, impacting the educational aspirations and mental well-being of its youth.
Coaching centers, commonly referred to as "coaching institutes" or "tuition centers," have boomed across Kashmir, promising academic success and lucrative career opportunities to students. There are an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 coaching centers operating in the region, catering to students from primary school to college levels. On the surface, these coaching centers appear to offer a solution to the challenges faced by Kashmiri students, including inadequate infrastructure in schools, limited access to quality education and so on. However, beneath the facade of academic support lies a complex web of issues that perpetuate the coaching menace.
One of the primary concerns surrounding coaching centers in Kashmir is their commercialization of education. As highlighted in a study by the Institute of Kashmir Studies, coaching centers often prioritize profit over pedagogy, charging exorbitant fees and resorting to unethical practices to lure students and parents. This commodification of education aggravates socio-economic disparities, as only affluent families can afford the high fees, leaving marginalized students at a disadvantage. Moreover, the coaching culture fosters a rote learning mentality, prioritizing memorization and exam centric preparation over critical thinking and holistic learning. According to research published in the Kashmir Reader, students enrolled in coaching centers often experience heightened stress, anxiety and mental health issues due to the relentless pressure to perform well in exams. Furthermore, the proliferation of coaching centers has led to a decline in the quality of education offered in schools, as students increasingly rely on external coaching for academic support. This over-reliance on coaching centers undermines the role of teachers and educational institutions, eroding the foundation of the formal education system in Kashmir.

The rampant growth of coaching centers has transformed the educational landscape, with coaching institutes becoming the focal point of students' lives, overshadowing extracurricular activities, social interactions and personal development.
However, amidst the gloom and despair, there is hope for change. Efforts to combat the coaching menace in Kashmir are underway, driven by grassroots initiatives, civil society organizations, and educational reformists. As documented in a study by the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society, advocacy campaigns, awareness programs and policy advocacy are being mobilized to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of the coaching culture and advocate for systemic reforms.
Key stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, teachers, students and parents, must collaborate to address the root causes of the coaching menace and promote a culture of quality education in Kashmir. This requires a multi-pronged approach, encompassing regulatory measures, curriculum reforms, teacher training programs and community engagement initiatives. Regulatory bodies should enforce stringent regulations to curb the proliferation of coaching centers and ensure compliance with ethical standards and quality benchmarks. Simultaneously, efforts should be made to revitalize the formal education system, with a focus on enhancing infrastructure, teacher capacity-building and curriculum innovation to meet the diverse needs of students.
