In a significant move which will further strengthen counterterrorism grid in Jammu and Kashmir, security agencies have stepped up their efforts to put an end to the menace of misuse of social media platforms which have been used by nefarious groups to stoke anti-India and anti-national activities. According to reports, the police department is actively tracking the IP addresses of individuals involved in such activities. It is not the first time that such an initiative has been started in Jammu and Kashmir. What makes this initiative apart is that the social media giants, including WhatsApp, X (formerly known as Twitter), Snapchat, Instagram, Telegram, and TikTok among other platforms have divided to provide direct cooperation to the Jammu and Kashmir Police to crack down on any antinational activity. This unique arrangement has granted the authorities access to information about those elements who exploit these platforms to spread anti-national sentiment and also spread radical propaganda which has the potential to sow seeds of hatred and violence among the young and impressionable minds. According to a recent report, the utility of this partnership recently came to the fore when the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Cyber Investigation Kashmir wing detained an individual from the capital Srinagar. According to the report, the suspect individual was found to be operating a fake Instagram account and posting anti-national content in the comment section. Several such accounts are being operated from both within Jammu and Kashmir and outside which are spreading fake and misleading information to keep the pot boiling in the union territory. Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with other security agencies have covered a lot of ground to restore peace in the UT. Reports suggest that agencies have also successfully infiltrated various social media groups,in order to closely monitor these nefarious activities. This infiltration has provided a wealth of valuable intelligence which is going to be of immense help for the security agencies in counterterrorism operations. It has come to the fore that even teenagers and youngsters are members of various social media groups involved in spreading misinformation and fanning the flames of violence. Here, it is important that parents keep a vigil and monitor their children's online activities. Police have urged people to ensure that their wards do not become unwitting participants in anti-national activities. After all law and order is not the responsibility of only police and other security agencies. As citizens we have to also remain alert and ensure that the atmosphere around us is peaceful. While the new accords of sorts between the police and social media behemoths will go a long way in cracking down on anti national activities, citizens also should do their bit so that Jammu and Kashmir remains safe and prosperous
