Muslim Community Benefits from PM Modi's Inclusive Policies

April 27, 2024 | Prof Jasim Mohammad

The Congress party has leveled the accusation of being a "liar" against Prime Minister Modi, citing unfulfilled promises as evidence. Such allegations warrant careful consideration and robust evidence to maintain the integrity of political discourse.
The Congress party’s official 'X' has been critical of PM Narendra Modi, suggesting that his promises remain unfulfilled and labeling him as 'liar'. Labeling someone and especially Prime Minister as a liar is a serious accusation that requires substantial evidence to substantiate. Simply disagreeing with PM Modi's policies or rhetoric does not automatically make him a liar. It's important for political discourse to maintain a level of civility and refrain from personal attacks. It is also important to acknowledge that PM Modi's administration has implemented several initiatives and policies that have had a tangible positive impact on the lives of millions of Indians, including those from marginalized communities. Dismissing these achievements as lies undermines the hard work and dedication of countless individuals involved in their implementation. Accusing someone of being a liar without substantial evidence is a childish behaviour.
While criticism is an essential component of a healthy democracy, it must be grounded in facts and constructive dialogue rather than baseless accusations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has indeed made significant developments in engaging with and supporting various communities across India, including the Muslim community. Initiatives such as the Skill Development Program and financial inclusion schemes have provided opportunities for empowerment and upliftment, benefiting individuals from all backgrounds.
The Congress party's labeling of PM Modi as a 'liar' lacks merit and does a disservice to the democratic process. It is essential to acknowledge the tangible progress and positive changes brought about by the Modi government, from infrastructure development to economic reforms that have bolstered India's global standing. Dismissing these accomplishments as falsehoods not only disregards the hard work of countless individuals but also undermines the trust and confidence of the electorate in the democratic system.
Furthermore, constructive criticism should focus on policy differences and areas for improvement rather than resorting to personal attacks. PM Modi's administration has demonstrated a commitment to inclusive governance through initiatives such as the Jan Dhan Yojana, which has brought millions of marginalized individuals into the formal banking system, and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which has made significant strides in improving sanitation and hygiene nationwide.
However, few days back PM Modi was addressing a rally in Rajasthan, and referenced a past statement of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh about Muslims, which is evident in Former PM's speech which he delivered in year 2006. The opposition has seized upon this moment, attempting to portray PM Modi in a negative light. Has PM Modi's administration not made significant efforts towards inclusive development for all communities, including Muslims? Despite criticisms, hasn't PM Modi consistently shown dedication to inclusive governance and equitable development for all segments of society, including Muslims? Haven't initiatives such as skill development programs for Muslim students, and modernization efforts in madrasas directly benefited Muslims across the country, enabling their fuller participation in India's growth story? Is it fair to accuse PM Modi of promoting communalism and being anti-Muslim, considering the various initiatives and efforts his government has undertaken specifically aimed at uplifting the Muslim community?
It is important to consider the broader context of PM Modi’s governance, which has been marked by efforts to ensure inclusive development for all communities, including Muslims. Despite criticisms from certain quarters, PM Modi has consistently demonstrated a commitment to inclusive governance and equitable development for all segments of society, including Muslims. PM Modi's government has implemented various schemes and programs specifically aimed at empowering the Muslim community economically, socially, and educationally. Initiatives such as skill development programs for Muslim students, and modernization efforts in madrasas have directly benefited Muslims across the country, enabling them to participate more fully in India's growth story.
PM Modi's outreach to the Muslim community goes beyond mere rhetoric, as evidenced by concrete actions such as the enactment of legislation against instant triple talaq, which has been widely welcomed by Muslim women for providing them with greater legal protection and empowerment.
Having personally met PM Modi on three occasions, I can attest to his genuine commitment to the welfare and upliftment of all communities, including Muslims. During our interactions, PM Modi has consistently emphasized the importance of inclusive development and the need to ensure that every Indian, regardless of religion, caste, or creed, has equal access to opportunities. His vision for a prosperous and harmonious India encompasses the empowerment of every citizen, including Muslims, through various initiatives and policies.
PM Modi has reiterated his belief in the principle of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" (Together with all, Development for all). His administration has worked tirelessly to address the socio-economic challenges faced by the Muslim community, implementing targeted programs such as skill development initiatives and modernization efforts in madrasas.
PM Modi's personal interactions and engagements with members of the Muslim community shows a genuine desire to understand their concerns and aspirations. His inclusive approach to governance is evident in his efforts to actively engage with diverse segments of society, listening to their feedback and incorporating their perspectives into policy-making processes.
As someone who has had the opportunity to engage with PM Modi directly, I can confidently state that his views on Muslims are rooted in a sincere desire for their upliftment and integration into the mainstream development agenda of the nation. It is essential to recognize and appreciate these efforts, rather than perpetuating unfounded allegations that undermine the progress towards a more inclusive and united India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration has made ample overtures towards the Muslim community in India. One of the notable events was the hosting of the World Sufi Forum in Delhi. During this event, PM Modi promoted the peaceful message of Sufi Islam and its deep roots in Indian culture. He emphasized that Sufism has been integral in promoting the values of peace and tolerance within Islam.
PM Modi reformed the Haj quota system. He personally requested the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia to increase the Haj quota for Indian Muslims, which led to a substantial increase in the number of pilgrims allowed to perform the Hajj from India. Previously, the allocation of Haj quota in India often led to disputes and instances of bribery, with only a select few having the opportunity to undertake the pilgrimage. Recognizing the challenges faced by Indian Muslims in accessing the holy pilgrimage, efforts were made to address the issue. Through diplomatic channels, discussions were held with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia to increase the Haj quota for Indian pilgrims. As a result of these discussions and concerted efforts, the Haj quota for India has been increased, and visa regulations have been streamlined, making it easier for Indian Muslims to fulfil their religious obligations.
The Modi government has also launched various initiatives aimed at uplifting the socio-economic status of impoverished Muslims. These include the enactment of a law against instant triple talaq, which has been cited as a move to secure the future of Muslim women. The government’s 15-point programme for minorities is another example, which focuses on enhancing opportunities for education, economic empowerment, and ensuring an equitable share in infrastructure development schemes.
Throughout his tenure, PM Modi has consistently spread a message of peace, brotherhood, and harmony. His speeches often call for unity and the celebration of India’s diversity. The government’s efforts to reach out to various sections of the Muslim community, including the backward sections known as Pasmaandas.
Modi has consistently advocated for the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” (With all, development for all, trust of all). This approach has led to various initiatives aimed at empowering marginalized communities, including Muslims.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken several initiatives to address the concerns and improve the welfare of the Pasmaanda Muslims, who are often from the Other Backward Class (OBC) category within the Muslim community. PM Modi has frequently mentioned ‘Pasmaanda Muslims’ in his speeches, and every time emphasized that their issues have not been adequately discussed in the country. His government has made efforts to include Pasmaanda Muslims in politics, providing 395 tickets to Muslim candidates, a majority of whom were Pasmaanda, in the Uttar Pradesh urban polls. In 2022, brass artist Dilshad Hussain, a member of the Pasmaanda community, was awarded the Padma Shri. He had met PM Modi and was later asked to send one of his brass pots to gift to the German chancellor, indicating recognition of the community’s artisans. The government has implemented policies and schemes for the welfare of women, including Muslim women from the Pasmaanda community. Modi always cares about Muslims. He wants everyone to live peacefully together in India, no matter their religion and ensures that Muslims have the same rights and opportunities as everyone.
