Monsoon rains will reach UT by mid-July
Jammu and Kashmir’s tryst with monsoon is likely to get delayed with the northern advancement of the clouds getting stalled near the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border, officials said on Friday.
Officials said the monsoon clouds have covered most of India’s southern and eastern areas. The southwest monsoon is advancing to cover the country’s northern and northwestern regions.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the monsoon is advancing through and over the southern parts of Gujarat, Bihar and Jharkhand.
Officials said that the monsoon was expected to enter East Uttar Pradesh last weekend and start covering the state this week. However, its advance has been stalled.
“This will impact its subsequent advance to the western Himalayas. Normally the monsoon would reach Jammu and Kashmir by Jun. 25. However it has got delayed by another couple of weeks,” an official in Srinagar meteorological department said.
Jammu and Kashmir was hit by incessant rains over the last four days this week, which resulted in submergence of key roads and residential areas. At least four people have died in rain-related incidents in the union territory this past week.
The long spell of rain triggered flash floods in the key tributaries of Jhelum including Vishow, Rambi Ara and Doodhganga, which led to the breach of flood declaration at the measurement stations in the capital Srinagar and south Kashmir’s Sangam.
Monsoon covers most parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh by June 20 while advancing into Jammu & Kashmir by June 30.
“But now, a new bulletin released by the IMD’s regional met centre in Shimla has indicated that in Himachal Pradesh, the rainfall activity will start to increase from this Sunday (June 26) onwards, following which the state will receive its first taste of the monsoon rains by the first week of July,” weather.com reported.
Officials said Uttarakhand will experience monsoon less than two before Himachal, provided the monsoon progression is steady and it will reach Jammu-Kashmir by the second week of July.
"If these predictions turn out to be true, this would mean the monsoon’s arrival over the Western Himalayan Region could be delayed by a week in the best-case scenario, and up to two weeks in the worst,” it reported.
